1957年、トプコンRの発売と共に登場した驚異の135mmレンズ。同じRトプコール135mmにはf3.5のものがあったが、それよりも一足早いデビューであった。絞りはプリセット。当時の発売価格は70,800円で、ボディよりもかなり高価であった。その重さも135mmとしては並ではなく、1kgを有に超える。正にレンズの塊という感じで、気楽に使えるレンズではない。デザインは77mmのフィルター径に対し、とても小さいEXマウントなので、そのくびれ方もすごいものがある。大柄なトプコンRに付けると、マウント口径が細い上に自動絞り機構も何も付いていないために、鏡胴のマウント側は余計に細く見える。 このレンズはREスーパーが発売されてからも販売されてはいたが、既に生産は中止そのものはほとんどされていなかったようで、かなりその数は少ないものと思われる。描写は大変シャープであるが、開放では周辺部の光量が若干低下する。カラー撮影の場合は若干黄色味がかるので、多少の補正が必要かも知れない。 それにしても、なぜ当時の東京光学はこのような優れたレンズを設計しておきながら、RE化しなかったのだろうか？ 単純に採算が取れるかどうかでは済まされない問題がそこにはあるような気がする。 |
| In 1957, when the Topcon R camera was put on the market, Topcon began offering a unusual, and unique, 135mm lens. This was a much faster lens than the R Topcor 135mm f3.5 also being sold. As with all other R Topcors, it employed a preset aperture. The price of this lens at that time was 70,800 Yen making it more expensive than the camera body. Because of it's bulk and weight, in excess of 1kg, it is not an easy lens to use. It is also a large lens and expands from the small diameter Exkata mount of the camera to a front element with a 77mm filter ring. The shape, and size, of this lens resembles a large bottle of beer mounted on the camera body, but it is well made and distinctive in appearance. Production of this lens ended before the RE Super camera was put on the market, making this lens scarce and rare. The resolution of this lens is good but illumination begins to fall off on the edges when the aperture is opened up. The image tends towards yellow and for color photography a change of optical design to correct the color balance would be desired. But why did Tokyo Optical not convert this lens to work with their new RE Super? Perhaps they felt the demand for such a unique lens would be low and sales would not cover the cost of redesign. | |

| これも1957年発売の、世界初のサンニッパ。手動プリセット絞りで二段構造の引き出し式フードを持つ。これが300mmかと思えるほど、大きく重いレンズである。最大径は130mm、長さ412mm、重さは3.3kgもある。4群6枚構成で、発売当時の価格は13万5000円と最も高価なレンズであった。フィルターはマウント側の鏡胴部に上から差し込む方式を取るが、これはこのレンズが最初に始めた方式であろう。135mm f2と異なりかなり長く生産が続けられたようで、70年代後半までカタログに見られる。その明るさから、東京オリンピックの公式記録レンズとして活躍した。不思議なことに現在に残るものの多くがニコンマウントに改造されており、エキザクタマウントのものはかえって少ないようだ。初期のものは革ケースであったが、後期のものはTOPCONのプラスチックエンブレムが誇らしく付けられたハードケースが標準であった。その性能は現代の蛍石などを用いた高価なレンズと比べても全く遜色がないほどシャープでコントラストのはっきりした優れたものである。最近まで一般的にはあまり知られていなかったレンズであるが、その実力は昔から高く評価されていた。 | |
| This, the first super fast long telephoto lens produced for any camera system world wide, came to the market in 1957. This was a large and heavy lens, with a 130mm maximum diameter, a length of 412 mm and a weight of 3.3 kg. The optical design was one of 6 elements in 4 groups. The selling price, at the time, was 135,000 Yen making it the most expensive lens on the market. Special filters slide into a slot at the rear of the lens barrel and this lens was probably the first to use this method. Unlike the 135mm f2 R Topcor, this lens was listed in catalogues into the later half of the 1970s. Because of it's large aperture it was chosen as the official lens of record for the Tokyo Olympics. An odd thing concerning this lens is that many of those remaining have been modified for the Nikon mount, while those with the original Topcon mount are very scarce. The early lens case was made of leather but later on Topcon began supplying a hard case with the TOPCON emblem promontory displayed. The R Topcor 300mm f2.8 lens still compares favorable, with regards to regards to sharpness and contrast, to modern lenses with fluorite elements. Today this lens is almost forgotten but was highly praised in former times. |

60年代後期デビューのトプコン唯一の超望遠レンズ（当時は300mmも超望遠としていたが）。重量は300mm f2.8よりかなり軽いが、それでも2kgを大幅に超える大柄なレンズなので、当然手持ち撮影は不可能である。フォーカスリングの後ろにあるボタンのようなものは三脚台座のロックのためのネジで、レンズの鏡胴自体はこの内側を通っており、全体を回転させて縦位置撮影する仕組みになっている。これはREズームオートトプコール87〜205mmと同じ形であるが、Rトプコール300mm f2.8はマウント部だけが回転する仕組みを採っている。REマウント化されたものとそれ以前のエキザクタマウントのままのレンズ間に、こうした差があるのは面白い。考えてみると自動絞りではボディ側から絞りを作動させるためのアームを絶えず一定の位置に配しておかないといけないので、マウント部だけを回転させることは不可能である。 |

| This was the only long telephoto that Topcon produced in the late 60s (although the 300mm telephoto lens was still available). This lens is considerably lighter than the 300mm F 2.8, but even so it still weighed over 2 kg making hand-held shots nearly impossible. As for the knob just behind the focusing ring, it is used to lock rotating tripod-mount ring. The main lens barrel rotates inside this ring, the same configuration used on the 87-205mm zoom lens. This arraignment is different than that used on the 300mm F 2.8 which allows the camera body to rotate without rotating the lens itself. It seems odd that Topcon would us a different method for the two lenses, but after some thought one realizes that the 500mm lens has meter coupling and an automatic diaphragm and requires that the lens and body rotate together. The resolution of this lens is fairly good, even wide open. The color balance seems a little warm when compared to the other Topcor lenses. |

| 上記のレンズ以外にも58年のカタログではレフレクタートプコール1000mm f7という反射望遠レンズも試作されていたが、59年のカタログからは消えているように、結局は発売されなかった。これとは別に、70年頃のカタログを見ると、REオートトプコール1000mm f11も発売されるはずだったようだが、価格未定という表示のままいつの間にか消え去ってしまった。こちらは一般的なテレレンズで、全長X最大径は823X111mm、重量3.6kgという細長いレンズであった。いずれにせよ一般の人々の手に渡らなかったのは残念で仕方ないことである。カメラのボディそのものの売上が鈍り、500mmもほとんど売れないような状況下で1000mmを発売しても、その生産本数はたかが知れており、会社に利益をもたらすことはほとんどなかったのは想像に難くないが、それにしてもファンの立場で考えると実にもったいないことをしたのではないかと思ってしまう。 | ||||||
